Southampton journalist Dan Sheldon has been singing the praises of Saints full-back Ryan Bertrand for his display in Monday’s 2-2 draw against Manchester United.

This comes after Sheldon recently made an appearance on the Total Saints Podcast to look back on the draw at Old Trafford earlier in the week.

Who scored Southampton's first goal of the season?

On the topic of Bertrand and how he fared in the match, Sheldon shared his praise for the Englishman.

He said: “I thought Ryan Bertrand was absolutely superb. Everyone knows he’s a good player, but he almost goes unnoticed at times. I think that block he put in towards the end, that just epitomised the whole performance from a Saints perspective anyway, but I didn’t even notice Mason Greenwood.

“I don’t know if Mason Greenwood had a bad game or Ryan Bertrand was just too good for him or just too wise and knew how to handle him. I think Ryan deserves a lot of credit for the performance. And like I said, he does go under the radar at times, but there are times to say when he was brilliant and Monday night was definitely one of them.”

The 30-year-old, who is currently valued at £9.45 million according to Transfermarkt, first signed to the Saints back in February 2015 from fellow Premier League side Chelsea for a fee of £11.97 million after spending a few months on loan at St. Mary’s (per Transfermarkt).

Overall, the defender has made a total of 204 appearances for the club in which he has managed to score eight goals and provide 19 assists along the way (per Transfermarkt).

Despite Sheldon’s praise for Bertrand and his display against United, WhoScored awarded the 30-year-old a match rating of 6.08/10, making him the second-lowest rated Southampton player on the day.

TIF Thoughts…

It’s good to see Sheldon praising Bertrand for his performance in the match against United, despite his rather low match rating from WhoScored.
