Steve Crossman speaking on Saturday’s episode of the Football Daily Podcast, has revealed his thoughts on Newcastle United’s potential new owners replacing Steve Bruce.

Starting with an easy one, against which club did Shelvey make his Newcastle debut?

Crossman mainly let others talk about the Bruce situation, but he did chip in with some cautionary advice for the Toon, amid talk that the new owners could replace him with a bigger name.

Here is what he had to say about Newcastle, as he brought up their weekend opponents West Ham, who parted with a Premier League-winning coach in Manuel Pellegrini earlier in the season:

“One of the reasons that this is kind of the perfect time to have this discussion is that Newcastle are playing West Ham – and West Ham are surely a cautionary tale about when you’ve suddenly got a lot of money to spend, giving that money to somebody who you see as being a ‘name’; it can go horribly wrong – and it’s gone horribly wrong for West Ham, let’s not kid ourselves.”

It seems as if Crossman feels Newcastle could get everything wrong if they appoint the wrong man for the club.

Do you think Newcastle will end up like West Ham?

TIF Thoughts…

West Ham appointed Pellegrini in May 2018, a manager who had won the Premier League as well as four other titles.

He also spent £170.19m on players, and the Hammers sacked him in December 2019 with the club in 17th place and replaced him with David Moyes, West Ham now find themselves in 16th place four points clear of the relegation zone, so we see Crossman’s point.

However, should Amanda Staveley’s Saudi-backed takeover go through, the Toon will find themselves backed by some major wealth.

Considering Bruce’s highest Premier League finish is 10th (achieved twice), and with the likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Rafael Benitez linked, we think that the potential new owners might want to bring in someone else to replace Bruce.

It will be interesting to see what happens should Staveley’s group be granted the approval they seek.
