On the latest episode of The Athletic’s Tottenham Hotspur-focused View from The Lane podcast, Jack Pitt-Brooke, James Maw and Dan Kilpatrick from the Evening Standard have been reflecting on Spurs’ 2019/20 campaign, and looking ahead to next season, during which a claim was made on the future of on-loan Toon left-back Danny Rose.

Rose’s future was one topic of conversation on the recent episode, which was titled ‘Spurs Season Review’. The 30-year-old joined Newcastle United on loan in the January transfer window, after a reported fall-out with Jose Mourinho, and now those on the podcast seem to believe that he is likely to join the Toon on a permanent deal in the summer transfer window.

Starting with an easy one, against which club did Shelvey make his Newcastle debut?

Here’s what Pitt-Brooke had to say about the England man on the podcast:

“I think another story of the season has been Spurs finally resolving, in various different ways, the knot of contract issues. It’s really hung over them for the last year or two, [Eric] Dier, [Jan] Vertonghen, [Toby] Alderweireld, [Christian] Eriksen and I suppose Danny Rose as well, were all coming to the end of their Tottenham contracts, none of them were signing a new one.”

He later adds: (40:18)

“We imagine that Rose will probably join Newcastle permanently later in the summer.”

TIF Thoughts…

Since joining from Spurs in January, Rose has made 11 appearances for Steve Bruce’s side in the Premier League; averaging a very poor 6.47 rating (per WhoScored). The Englishman had previously suggested that he was planning on staying with Spurs until the expiry of his contract in 2021 when he would depart on a free (per The Guardian) but it seems as if Pitt-Brooke is tipping the Magpies to make his loan deal permanent this summer.

With the 30-year-old currently valued at £14.4 million by Transfermarkt, it will be interesting to see how much the Toon potentially end up paying for the defender, although you would perhaps expect any signings to wait until after a decision has been made on the proposed takeover.
