Nice easy one to start off with, which club did Newcastle United sign Shearer from in 1996?

This post from the club then gathered a lot of replies from Newcastle fans, who were quick to share their thoughts on this latest piece of transfer business from the club.

Here’s a sample of Newcastle fans responding to the post:

The ‘keeper was a part of the Newcastle youth system from 2000 to 2008 before moving to Carlisle United.

In 2017, he left Carlisle on a free transfer to Walsall where he spent just one year before moving to Scottish club Motherwell (per Transfermarkt).

After making 67 appearances for Motherwell in which he managed to keep 25 clean sheets, he has now returned to his boyhood club.

Now that the club have officially announced the signing of Gillespie, this sparked a big reaction on Twitter with lots of Newcastle fans sharing their thoughts on the move.

However, there were some Newcastle fans responding to the post who assumed that this latest transfer deal means that the proposed takeover from Amanda Staveley and her Saudi-based consortium is not happening.

It’s good to see the majority of these Newcastle fans are pleased to see Gillespie back at the club, however, it seems the perceived low-key nature of his signing has fans worried about the fate of the club’s proposed takeover.
