Some Newcastle United fans have been responding to a tweet that was recently posted by Toon-focused journalist Craig Hope which provided confirmation that Newcastle United’s final game of the 2019/20 Premier League season ‘will be played at St. James’ Park’.
This tweet included a link to an article that Hope recently wrote for the Daily Mail which explains that this fixture ‘had been among those flagged by police as high-risk amid fears that supporters of both clubs could gather on Tyneside.’
This article went on to state that police were concerned that Reds fans would travel to St. James’ Park to ‘mark the final match of what could be a record-breaking season’ in which they’ve secured their first English top-flight title in 30 years, while this report also claims that police are ‘aware of the #cans hashtag on social media, which has been used to talk about the prospect of toasting new owners’ and they had concerns that Toon fans could celebrate the end of unpopular owner Mike Ashley’s tenure at the club on the final game of what would be the club’s final season under his ownership if the ongoing Saudi-backed Toon takeover bid is approved.
After Hope’s tweet sharing this news was posted, plenty of Toon fans flocked to the post to share their thoughts on this update.
Liverpool's final game of title-winning season against Newcastle WILL be played at St James' Park, despite original police fears over fans gathering & the #cans hashtag https://t.co/a8iqnifeOi

Some Newcastle fans shared that they believe that the news could mean that the takeover won’t be approved by the time that the final fixture of the 2019/20 season comes around.

#cans won’t have happened by then anyway.

Meanwhile, some Toon supporters poked some fun at other fans of the club for thinking that this news would mean that the takeover will not be completed.

Inb4 our paranoid fans overthink this and believe it means the takeover isn’t happening.

Other Newcastle fans replied to this post to share that they think it’s funny that the police were allegedly concerned by a hashtag.
Are you worried about the takeover because of this news?YESNO |
Police feared a hash tag well aye man hahahahaha
— Andrew Kain (@andrewk88_NUFC) July 1, 2020
They fear #cans ??
— craige (@craigelanga26) July 1, 2020
The police feared a hashtag for cans? lol
— Angel ? (@AngelNUFC) July 1, 2020
It may be understandable why some Toon fans think it is funny that Hope has claimed that the police had ‘fears’ over the ‘#cans hashtag’, considering that it is just a Twitter trend and it doesn’t necessarily mean that Newcastle supporters are going to flock to St. James’ Park on the last game of the season.
