Football journalist Barry Glendenning has shared an update on Newcastle United winger Allan Saint-Maximin and his future at St. James’ Park.

This comes after Glendenning recently made an appearance on The Guardian’s Football Weekly Podcast to discuss the latest news from the Premier League and EFL fixtures.

Nice easy one to start off with, which club did Newcastle United sign Shearer from in 1996?

During the episode, Glendenning spoke about Saint-Maximin and what his future at Newcastle could look like.

He said: “There’s the same kind of buzz around him as there was around Adama Traore when he was at Middlesbrough. Saint-Maximin, he came with a reputation as a troublemaker and punctuality was a problem. He was very raw, they said, and he is still raw. There’s a lot of potential to harness there.

“But he’s been quite the purchase, although I believe he’s signed on a very, very long contract for some reason or other, but I’d imagine if Newcastle wished to get rid of him at some point, which they probably will if Mike Ashley is still in charge, there’d be no shortage of takers.”

Saint-Maximin, who is currently valued at £18 million according to Transfermarkt, signed to Newcastle in the previous summer transfer window for a fee of £16.2 million from French side OGC Nice.

Since then, the 23-year-old has made 25 appearances for Steve Bruce’s side in all competitions in which he has managed to score four goals and provide seven assists (per Transfermarkt).

The Frenchman’s performances in his 21 Premier League appearances so far this season have earned him a season rating of 7.34/10, making him Newcastle’s highest-rated player for this campaign (per WhoScored).

TIF Thoughts…

Given how impressive Saint-Maximin has been for Newcastle this season, it’s no surprise that Glendenning thinks that other teams could be interested in signing the winger should the opportunity arise at some point in the future.
