Liverpool fan Steve McNorton shared his thoughts on Manchester City’s ‘disrespectful’ guard of honour during his latest appearance on the Football Social Daily podcast after comparing it to Aston Villa’s guard of honour from this past weekend.
Manchester City gave the Premier League title-winning Reds a guard of honour ahead of Liverpool’s 4-0 loss at the Etihad Stadium last week. City’s guard of honour has received criticism from some Reds fans who believed that City didn’t ‘put enough effort’ into the gesture, as per Manchester Evening News.

Relegation-battling Aston Villa also gave Liverpool a guard of honour ahead of their 2-0 loss to the Reds at Villa Park last weekend and McNorton praised this gesture during his latest appearance on the Football Social Daily podcast, saying: “There was a lot of class in that guard of honour from Aston Villa,” going on to say that Villa “were very respectful.”
McNorton then went on to slate Manchester City’s guard of honour. He said: “The Man City one was a joke, really. I thought, generally, they were quite disrespectful and I get that they’ve lost the title to one of the teams that they’re rivals with but I think, in sport, if something happens like that; if a boxer gets beat or if a rugby team lose, there’s got to be sportsmanship displayed for me, whatever the circumstances are.”

TIF Thoughts…
While a guard of honour does show respect for another team, as per the BBC, it is not an official obligation. With that in mind, this Reds fan may be overreacting to Manchester City’s “disrespectful” guard of honour, as the fact that last season’s Premier League winners gave the Reds a guard of honour at all does show respect for the newly-crowned Premier League champions and it may be harsh to criticise City for not putting enough effort into their clapping.
