Marley Anderson and Steve McNorton joined Jim Salveson on a recent edition of the Football Social Daily podcast where they discussed the latest goings-on in the Premier League and one of the topics of discussion that came up during this podcast is Liverpool’s squad depth.

This topic of discussion came about after Salveson noted that the Reds’ lineup in their 2-0 win over Aston Villa last weekend was a strong one in his view, despite the fact that Liverpool have already been crowned Premier League champions for the 2019/20 campaign. The podcast host said: “There were a couple of players rested, but at the same time, there was one intention from Liverpool in that game and that was to win.”

McNorton, a Liverpool fan, then responded to Salveson by saying that: “Even though the lineup was quite strong, I still think we made life hard for ourselves [against Villa] because when he [Jurgen Klopp] made the triple substitution and brought [Jordan] Henderson, [Georginio] Wijnaldum and [Roberto] Firmino on – it just changed the game.”

McNorton then went on to discuss Liverpool’s squad depth, saying: “That’s the problem at Liverpool and something I’ve spoken about [for] quite a while – this depth in the squad is an issue, for me.

“It’s a tough situation Liverpool are in, because you’re going out and signing players and saying – ‘hey, do you want to come and sit on our bench and try and make an impact off the bench?’ Because the starting 11 is that strong, but they have to have more coming off the bench.”

TIF Thoughts…

McNorton may have a point in saying that the substitution that saw Henderson, Wijnaldum, and Firmino replace Fabinho, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Divock Origi may have made a positive impact on this game against Aston Villa for the Reds, as both of their goals against Villa came after this triple substitution took place

However, as per Transfermarkt, Liverpool have got the second-most valuable squad of any Premier League side at present, which may indicate that the Merseyside club have got plenty of highly valued players in their squad. Additionally, the Reds’ manager Klopp has praised the quality that exists throughout his squad in the past, claiming that Liverpool have got no “fringe players,” so, with that in mind, Liverpool’s squad depth may not be as big of a ‘problem,’ as McNorton claimed it is.
