Mark Baker, a contributor on the Blood Red podcast, has been discussing the future of Liverpool winger Xherdan Shaqiri.

The Swiss international has been a bit-part player for Jurgen Klopp’s champions this season, making just seven appearances in the Premier League throughout the 2019/20 campaign (via Transfermarkt.co.uk). The 28-year-old arrived at Anfield for a reported £13.23m from Stoke City back in July 2018 and has gone on to make a total of 41 appearances for the Reds, contributing seven goals and five assists so far.

When discussing the ‘gulf’ in class between Liverpool’s first-choice front three and those who are in reserve, Baker mentioned the former Bayern Munich man and what he believes is likely to happen with regards to his future.

He said: “There is a bit of a gulf in terms of when one of the players is out in the highest line of the pitch. Shaqiri, again, didn’t come on to the field of play [on Sunday]. That suggests to me – the fact that he hasn’t appeared – though he made a fleeting appearance at Arsenal, that the player will be looking to move on and Liverpool will look to get a fee for him.”

TIF Thoughts…

Based on the fact Shaqiri has made just 11 appearances in all competitions for the Anfield giants this season, we believe he will need to move on in order to start playing regular football again. Injuries may have hampered the £14.4m-rated man’s potential progress this year, though he was ultimately unable to claim a regular starting place upon his return to fitness. Therefore, although Shaqiri’s current contract doesn’t expire until June 2023, taking all of the above into consideration, we believe there is a strong chance this season on Merseyside will have been his last.
