Ali Maxwell and George Elek discussed all the latest Championship news during the most recent edition of The Athletic’s Going Up, Going Down podcast and the pair spent some time discussing Rhian Brewster, who is currently on loan at Swansea City from Liverpool

Brewster has been enjoying a positive spell at Swansea since moving to the Championship club on loan from the Reds back in January

2018/19 season quiz: How many points did Jurgen Klopp's side accumulate in the Premier League?

The 20-year-old made his 18th appearance of the 2019/20 Championship campaign in the Swans’ 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest on Wednesday and he also scored his ninth Championship goal of the season in that game.

Maxwell was full of praise for Brewster during the latest edition of The Athletic’s Going Up, Going Down podcast and the journalist compared him to Chelsea attacker and England international Tammy Abraham, who also spent some time on loan with Swansea City in the past and finished the 2018/19 campaign, when he was on loan at Aston Villa, as the Championship’s joint-second highest goalscorer, trailing only Teemu Pukki.

Here is what Maxwell had to say about Brewster: “This is a 20-year-old on loan from Liverpool – not the first time that there’s been Premier League loanees come down to the Championship with a lot of hype attached to them, and let’s not pretend that they always light it up.

“You have examples like Tammy Abraham, who joined Bristol City as a young player – immediately in the goals. Didn’t get much of a chance with Swansea in the Premier League on loan, then dropped down again with Villa, scored a lot of goals again and I think Brewster seems to be in the same mould.”

Could Rhian Brewster become a viable first-team option for Liverpool in the near future?

TIF Thoughts…

As Maxwell explained, prior to joining Swansea on loan for the 2017/18 season, Abraham enjoyed a positive loan spell with Bristol City in the Championship, scoring 23 goals in 41 league games for the Robins during the 2016/17 campaign.

This season, Abraham has scored 14 Premier League goals for third-placed Chelsea and he is the Blues’ top league goalscorer for the 2019/20 campaign.

With that in mind, Liverpool fans may welcome this comparison between Brewster and Abraham. If the 20-year-old Reds attacker can continue to develop in a similar manner to Abraham, then he could well offer some depth to the Merseyside club’s attacking options in the future.
