Josh Williams has been discussing the rumours linking Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara with a move to Liverpool on a recent edition on the Blood Red podcast

The 29-year-old’s contract with the Bundesliga champions is due to expire at the end of next season (as per Transfermarkt.co.uk), fuelling talk that he could be set for a move away from Bavaria. He has appeared in 24 of the club’s 34 league fixtures this season and picked up his seventh German title since joining the club in 2013.

2018/19 season quiz: How many points did Jurgen Klopp's side accumulate in the Premier League?

When discussing his initial reaction to the rumours and how his view on the story has evolved since Williams said: “I was 95% sure that it was just garbage. But I’ve since been surprised at how reluctant Liverpool journos have been to shoot it down. Obviously former Liverpool Echo writer James Pearce has teased it, let’s say. I think Paul Joyce as well has followed Thiago on Twitter, and there has been various outlets from Brazil, Spanish outlets as well and in Germany, it’s quite recognised now that he does want to leave.”

TIF Thoughts…

The Spaniard is currently valued at £43.2m according to Transfermarkt.co.uk, therefore, we can assume that Bayern Munich would be looking for a substantial fee in order to release the player prior to next summer.

Would you like to see Liverpool make a move for Thiago?

No

In 36 appearances this season, Thiago has scored three goals and provided two assists, which on the face of it, in our view doesn’t appear particularly inspiring, however when you take in to account his average performance in the league of 7.47/10 it’s clear he continues to perform at a high standard.

He finished the Bundesliga season as Hans-Dieter Flick’s fourth most consistent performer behind only Serge Gnabry, Alphonso Davies, and Robert Lewandowski – highlighting his importance to the squad. In our view, even if the player was interested in a move to the Premier League, we suspect Liverpool may pass up on the opportunity to sign him due to the financial implications of the recent global pandemic and given Klopp’s comments regarding the Timo Werner saga.
