Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has discussed the fees that Liverpool paid to agents during the 2019/20 Premier League season.

In late June, a breakdown of the figures of what each top-flight club paid to agents over the duration of the season was published (via BBC).

In total, Premier League clubs paid out £263m to football agents over the duration of the season and the Reds topped the chart having paid £30.3m in agent fees.

So, in the latest episode of The Price of Football Podcast, Maguire discussed the figure that had been paid out by Jurgen Klopp’s outfit.

2018/19 season quiz: How many points did Jurgen Klopp's side accumulate in the Premier League?

He said: “I think what’s intriguing about the Liverpool figure is, can you name any people they signed during that period? No. So, what Liverpool have done is they’ve focused their agent spending on existing players and extending contracts.

“So, we always tend to think that the likes of [Mino] Raiola and so on, they get these massive commissions from when star players move. This information actually has come from the Football Association itself, it publishes this once a year and it lists out all of the contracts to which those commissions were involved – and in Liverpool’s case, it’s all to do with keeping some of their star names at the club for a longer period of time.

“And given the way that they have played this season, you can understand why that is the case.”

TIF Thoughts…

As can be seen in what the finance expert had to say, it seems that Liverpool spent most of their agent fees on keeping their better players at the club.

Do you believe there is too much money being spent on agents by Premier League clubs?

No, I'm not bothered

With the club currently sitting 20 points clear at the top of the Premier League table (per BBC), having already been named champions (per BBC), it seems that focussing on keeping the players they already had was a good decision by the Reds.
