Journalist Theo Squires has been discussing the reports linking Liverpool with a move for Bayern Munich’s Thiago Alcantara on the Blood Red podcast

The 29-year-old’s contract with the Bundesliga giants is set to expire in June 2021 (as per Transfermarkt.co.uk) but according to Squires, the Reds have no interest in the player at the moment. However, he didn’t rule out the possibility of that changing.

Speaking on Saturday’s edition of the podcast, he said: “We did some digging yesterday and as far as our sources are saying, there is not Liverpool interest in him at the moment. And it’s a hard one to really look at when you think he is what Liverpool need, if you look at the defeat to Manchester City in midweek when they’re lacking creativity or the full-backs aren’t at it. They need something centrally, they need that playmaker, and this is what he’d offer, but they’ve got a hell of a lot of central midfielders.

“So if you throw another midfielder into the mix, it makes it even more of a minefield for the manager. It’s just an interesting one to keep an eye on, I suppose, because if he does become available with a year left on his contract, it could become a bit more of an appealing transfer to make when the markets are all up in the air at the moment.”

TIF Thoughts…

Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick has suggested that Thiago has expressed his desire to play in another of Europe’s big leagues, opening the door for the Spaniard to come to the United Kingdom, but he was also clear on the fact he is trying his best to keep the former Barcelona man in Bavaria (via Goal.com).

Thiago has made 24 appearances in the Bundesliga this season and contributed three goals. According to WhoScored.com, his average performance rating in the German top-flight this season stands at an impressive 7.47/10 and it has been even higher in the UEFA Champions League where he averages an 8/10.

Although Squires claims there is no current interest in the player from the Anfield giants, he suggests that could change if Thiago were to become available. Given the number of midfielders the former Borussia Dortmund boss has at his disposal and taking into consideration the journalist’s comments, we believe that unless we see some departures this summer, the signing of Thiago seems unlikely.
