Ex-Liverpool player Steve Nicol joined Kay Murray on a recent edition of ESPN FC’s ‘Transfer Rater’ to discuss some of the latest transfer-related stories from the Premier League. The pair spent some time discussing alleged Chelsea target and current Real Madrid attacker Luka Jovic and the recent reports claiming that Leicester City are set to join the race for his signature.

Jovic joined Real Madrid from Eintracht Frankfurt last summer for £54m after he scored 27 goals in 48 appearances for the Bundesliga club in all competitions during the 2018/19 campaign.

To kick off this 1990s Premier League quiz, which season was the Premier League's inaugural campaign?

This season, however, the Serbia international has scored just two goals in 25 appearances for Real Madrid and according to a recent report from the Daily Star, Los Blancos could sell the attacker for a fee of ‘up to £31m’.

This recent report from the Daily Star also claimed that Leicester City are prepared to join Chelsea in the race for the 22-year-old’s signature, stating that the Foxes ‘need reinforcements up front’.

Nicol discussed the links between Leicester and the Real Madrid man during his recent appearance on ESPN FC’s Transfer Rater, where he said: “I think it’ll depend on whether Brendan [Rodgers] is going to stick with playing two up front or just have [Jamie] Vardy on his own.

“[Kelechi] Iheanacho, certainly since the [beginning of Project Restart] has played up with Vardy – I would suggest that Jovic is probably better than Iheanacho, so I guess it depends on how Brendan is going to play.

“There’s no point in bringing Jovic in to have him sat on the bench, where he is now. I think if you bring him in and spend that money, certainly if I’m an owner and the manager wants £40m to bring a player in, I’m assuming he’s going to play him. So, I would suggest this is about how Brendan is going to set his team up in the future because if it’s two up front, then I think Jovic would be a good signing.”

TIF Thoughts…

Vardy has been enjoying some impressive form this season, scoring 23 of Leicester’s 65 Premier League goals during the 2019/20 campaign. This makes the Englishman the current top scorer in England’s top flight for the current season.

However, no other Leicester player has scored more than seven league goals this term. With that in mind, it may be fair to say that the Foxes have been quite reliant on Vardy for goals this season and it might be a good idea for them to enter the market for a striker this summer.

As a result, it may be understandable why Nicol believes that this potential transfer ‘would be a good signing’ for Leicester City.
