Following Everton’s 1-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur on Monday night, former Blues man Tim Cahill has criticised the club’s transfer business in recent windows.
The Australian spoke on Sky Sports following the game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and was less than complimentary about the sort of money that his former club has been spending in recent windows. The Toffees spent big on the likes of Alex Iwobi, Moise Kean, Andre Gomes and Jean-Philippe Gbamin in last year’s summer transfer window (per Transfermarkt) but have endured a disappointing Premier League campaign, sitting in 11th position following the defeat on Monday evening.
Here’s what Cahill had to say about Everton’s transfer business and the need for a restructure at the Merseyside club, as he spoke of the size of Carlo Ancelotti’s task at Goodison Park:
“It’s going to take time because the players and the restructure of the club, he’s inherited a group of players that have been signed for 30, 50 million, spent a hell of a lot of money, and it’s definitely not good enough for the club. So he’s basically trying to recalibrate the team.”
TIF Thoughts…
Cahill is no doubt a legend to a lot of Everton fans, considering the 40-year-old contributed 68 goals and 29 assists in his 276 appearances for the club (per Transfermarkt), and fans may agree with his sentiment that the Toffees should be in a better position when taking into account the money that has been spent in recent windows.
Do you agree with Cahill?
Yes
No
Of course, Everton endured a horrible start to the Premier League campaign that resulted in Marco Silva being sacked in December of last year, so it may be better to judge the club’s position next season once Ancelotti has had a full pre-season with his squad.
