Journalist Michael Cox has made it clear that he believes that something is wrong at Everton.

Cox was recently a guest on the latest episode of the ‘Totally Football Show’ podcast and while the panel was talking about many things about the Premier League, Cox discussed Everton’s situation. The journalist suggested that Seamus Coleman’s post-match interview revealed that there may be more deeply rooted problems at the Goodison Park-based club.

Everton recently played against Wolves at the weekend, with Carlo Ancelotti’s men losing 3-0. After the game, Seamus Coleman described it as a ‘shocking’ performance. He also went on to question the attitude and desire of the club’s players.

While talking about the Toffees though, Cox said: “Seamus Coleman did an interview after the game where he was quite critical of the rest of the squad and was basically hinting there was a kind of mentality problem and said maybe we’re not as good as we think we are. Just for a senior player and someone who [we] can’t really think of being that outspoken in that way before, just hinted that maybe there’s something deeper at Everton than just who the manager is.

“They’ve had a lot of managers in recent years with very different styles, and sooner or later, they’ve all kind of come a cropper. It’s just not entirely sure the direction Everton are going in terms of the on-pitch style of football. It just sounded a bit worrying, really.”

Cox seems to believe that Coleman’s words are perhaps a reflection of whatever is wrong at Everton and these issues don’t really relate to the manager.

TIF Thoughts…

Since returning from lockdown, Ancelotti’s men have won only two Premier League games. While they did beat Norwich and Leicester City, they have failed to win in any of their last three league outings. Before losing to Wolves, they lost to Tottenham and were held to a draw by Southampton (via WhoScored).

Ancelotti had arrived at the club back in December. Since arriving, the Italian has managed a total of 18 games and the club’s points per match stat stands at only 1.44, which is the lowest of Ancelotti’s managerial career.

So while there may be issues at the club, Ancelotti perhaps just needs some time to transform this team tactically and mentally. Ancelotti has won multiple trophies across Europe and it shows that if he gets the time needed, he can probably fix some issues at Everton.
