The Athletic’s Matt Woosnam joined Josh Schneider-Weiler on the most recent edition of the Football Today podcast to discuss Crystal Palace’s academy and Woosnam spent some time discussing Eagles youth player Tyrick Mitchell during the show.

To kick off this 1990s Premier League quiz, which season was the Premier League's inaugural campaign?

As per the club’s official website, Palace’s academy was recently granted ‘Category 1 status’ which ranks them alongside the top academies in English football. During his recent appearance on the Football Today podcast, Woosnam explained that one of the benefits of this upgrade in status is that this could help the Eagles to retain their best youth players for a greater length of time in the future.

However, that’s not to say that Palace don’t have some exciting prospects in their academy already and when asked if there are “any young players that we should know about or keep an eye on for the future?” Woosnam took the opportunity to praise Palace U23s left-back, Mitchell.

The journalist said: “At the moment, in the U23 side, although he’s sort of come up with the first team, he made his debut – Tyrick Mitchell. He’s a left-back, kind of in the mould of Aaron Wan-Bissaka; a little bit to work on going forward, but still a modern full-back.

“He’s very good on the ball, he’s an excellent tackler, he’s quick, he’s strong, he’s composed and he’s confident. He’s someone that will certainly be in and around the conversation, knocking on that door.”

TIF Thoughts…

It may be fair to say that this comparison between Mitchell and Wan-Bissaka is high praise for the 20-year-old full-back, considering that Wan-Bissaka, who is also a Palace youth product, left the club to join Manchester United for £49.5m last summer and has been enjoying a positive season with the Red Devils this term, making an average of 3.7 tackles per Premier League game – the third-highest number of tackles per game that have been made by any player in England’s top flight this season

With that in mind, this comparison may be an exciting one for Eagles fans and they may be keen to see more of Mitchell in first-team action next season after he made his Premier League debut for the club earlier this term.
