Niall McCaughan, Adam Keyworth and Steve McNorton discussed the latest goings-on in the Premier League during a recent edition of the Football Social Daily podcast and during this show, the panel spent some time discussing Aston Villa and the possibility that they will be relegated from England’s top flight this season.

Villa, who earned promotion to the Premier League last season, currently sit inside of the Premier League’s relegation zone and ahead of Thursday’s top-flight clash with top-four hopefuls Manchester United, they are without a win in 10 straight Premier League games

With that in mind, it may be fair to say that Villa’s hopes of avoiding relegation to the Championship for the 2020/21 season are not looking good at present.

This potential relegation may be made worse for Villa fans by the fact that their club has got a higher net transfer spend than any other Premier League side for the 2019/20 season, indicating that they may not have spent their money very wisely.

During a recent edition of the Football Social Daily podcast, Keyworth shared his thoughts on the possibility of Villa suffering relegation this season and explained why he believes the club could be “in so much trouble” if they are relegated.

Keyworth said: “Villa, if they do go down, are in so much trouble. They’ve done the total opposite of Norwich. They’ve spent so much money and it’s just not worked and they’re going to lose their best players. They’re in trouble there.”

TIF Thoughts…

Considering that Villa have got a higher net transfer spend than any other Premier League side this season, it may be fair to say that they invested a lot in trying to secure their Premier League safety.

As per Sky Sports, while relegated clubs do receive parachute payments, ‘there is still a large shortfall for clubs to make up,’ with relegation reportedly costing clubs ‘approximately £50m in Premier League distributions alone.’

With that in mind, it may be understandable why Keyworth believes that relegation may be particularly bad for Villa due to the amount of money that they have spent in order to try and secure their safety in England’s top flight.
