Aston Villa journalist Chris Budd has been sharing his thoughts on Villa striker Mbwana Samatta.
This comes after Budd recently made an appearance on Villa-themed podcast My Old Man Said to reflect on Villa’s recent defeat to Wolves.
On the topic of Samatta, Budd shared his thoughts and opinions on the striker and how he has fared for the club in recent matches.
He said: “He’s a proper goalscorer-type striker. He needs service and you saw that in the [Carabao] Cup final, you give him a chance and he’ll bury it. And there was the header at Newcastle which I’d classed as a half chance you’d probably expect him to hit the target, but it was a half-chance for us.
“I think, same as Wesley, if you give Wesley good service, he’s shown he can put the ball in the net. Look at the service [Tammy] Abraham had the previous season, Abraham would miss two or three a game, but he’d always get another chance and he’d usually bury it.”
The Tanzanian, who is currently valued at £8.55 million according to Transfermarkt, signed for the Birmingham club in the last January transfer window shortly after Wesley suffered a serious knee injury.
Since becoming a Villa player, Samatta has made 10 appearances for the club but has only managed to score two goals along the way (per Transfermarkt).
For his performance in the defeat to Wolves, Samatta was given a match rating of 6.68/10, making him Villa’s fourth-highest rated player on the day (per WhoScored).

TIF Thoughts…
Despite putting in a fairly decent performance against Wolves, Samatta didn’t find the back of the net, which is ultimately what Villa need him to do if they are going to avoid relegation this season.
