During the episode, Ornstein answered a question on what Arsenal’s transfer plans are likely to be this summer.

He said: “I think Arsenal would have always been looking to move some players on this summer. And of course, that would generate income, even more so with the [pandemic] crisis, and their likely league finish position. Possibly, as you say, [with] no European football, then that will become an even more pressing situation to get players out that they don’t want. Maybe the likes of Matteo Gunedouzi, a couple of their centre-halves, maybe a midfielder in addition to Guendouzi.

“Arsenal are really going to have to assess things very carefully if there is to be no European football. We know that like many clubs, Arsenal will be looking at some swap deals, some loans, some use of money that is raised by selling players. And what we don’t know is whether the Arsenal ownership could provide any kind of injection of cash. They haven’t provided that for transfers so far, but they have put mechanisms and instruments in place to make spending possible. We saw that last summer with the signing of Nicolas Pepe, among others.

“They’ve got a huge amount of work to do on their squad in terms of outgoings and incomings to really give Mikel Arteta the players that he feels can help implement his plan and vision for the club.”

What will be more important for Arsenal this summer?

Bringing in new players

Bringing in new players

Getting rid of current players

Getting rid of current players

Arsenal currently sit in ninth place in the Premier League table with three matches left to play this season.

From the previous winter and summer transfer windows, Arsenal were fairly active in their transfer business with numerous players arriving and departing the north London club.

As Ornstein mentioned, the previous summer transfer window saw the club splash out a club-record fee of £72 million to sign Nicolas Pepe from LOSC Lille (per Transfermarkt).

TIF Thoughts…

It appears that Ornstein believes that Arsenal will once again be pretty active in the transfer window this year, whether it be incomings or outgoings on different types of deals such as part-exchanges or loans.

Given how Arsenal are currently sitting in the middle of the Premier League table, you would think that they may need to either bring in some new players or get rid of some current ones if they are to improve next season.
