James McNicholas of The Athletic has suggested Arsenal should consider offering Shkodran Mustafi a new contract.

The 28-year-old’s current deal has until June 2021 to run, therefore, next summer the Gunners could risk losing the former German international to a free transfer. Mustafi has made 13 appearances in the Premier League this season and when he has played in his favoured position of centre-back, in all competitions, he has averaged a performance rating of 7.15/10 (as per WhoScored.com).

Speaking on a recent episode of the Arsecast Extra, regarding the player, McNicholas said: “I really do have reservations about this player just because of our history with him and, this sounds funny – but knowing what he’s capable of. I do wonder if there is a case to be made for extending the contract based largely on economics.

“If Arsenal want Mustafi to be part of the squad next season, then they should try and offer him an extension so they don’t lose him for nothing at the end of it.”

TIF Thoughts…

Mustafi played 90 minutes for Mikel Arteta’s side during their recent visit to Wolverhampton Wanderers. The North London club ran out 2-0 winners thanks to goals from Bukayo Saka and Alexandre Lacazette but the result in our view was built on an impressive defensive performance, in which the former Valencia man played his part, earning a rating of 7.05/10 (via WhoScored.com).

No

According to Transfermarkt.co.uk, the player is currently valued at £10.8m but with his contract situation the way it is, we believe his value could decrease as a result. Therefore, if as McNicholas says, Mikel Arteta sees Mustafi as part of his plans moving forward – offering him an extension sooner rather than later, we believe, seems like the sensible thing to do.
