Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has been discussing the latest regarding the administration of Wigan Athletic.

In early July, it was announced that the DW Stadium club had gone into administration and that would incur a 12-point deduction at some point depending on their finishing position in the league (per BBC).

The club’s manager Paul Cook then described the current period with Wigan as “the worst, toughest week of my career” in recent days (per BBC).

In the latest episode of The Price of Football podcast, Maguire discussed the latest with the club and the fact that things may get worse still for Wigan.

He said: “Gerald Krasner, who is the administrator, he’s having an investigation. They’re going to appeal the 12-point deduction for this season but we don’t know whether or not that will be successful.

“He’s [Krasner] also concerned that there could be a 15-point deduction when Wigan come out of administration, because if they fail to pay the creditors at least 25 pence in the pound, then another penalty kicks in.

“So, Wigan could end up getting relegated through no fault of their own due to the nefarious activities which have taken place between the two new owners, and they could also start next season with a 15-point deduction unless they’re able to sell the club [to] allow them to pay the creditors at least 25 pence in the pound.

“Gerald Krasner also said that this £24m loan that was repaid to the owners. Well, he doesn’t know who paid it, but it certainly wasn’t Wigan themselves. So, it’s becoming more Agatha Christie by the day.”

TIF Thoughts…

As can be judged from what Maguire had to say, it seems that the situation with the Latics is only getting more complicated when more is revealed.

Does the EFL have to take some of the responsibility for the situation at Wigan?

Yes, partly their fault

Yes, partly their fault

No, they're not to blame

No, they're not to blame

For the sake of the club and its supporters, though, hopefully, Krasner can get to the bottom of what has gone on behind the scenes.
