Leeds United have an interest in Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, according to The Athletic’s Phil Hay.

The journalist was asked by a supporter on Twitter whether there was any truth in the reports linking the Whites with a move for Manchester United’s Sergio Romero to which he responded: ‘I know they like Martinez at Arsenal. Romero is a similar fit.’

Nice easy one to start off with, from which club did Leeds sign Hernandez?

Martinez joined Arsenal from Independiente back in July 2010 and has spent loan spells at Oxford United, Sheffield Wednesday, Rotherham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Getafe and Reading. The Gunners lost their first-choice goalkeeper Bernd Leno to an injury last month, which ruled him out for the remainder of the league season, handing the Argentinian stopper with an opportunity to play regularly in the Premier League – and it is fair to say he has impressed.

Although he has made just eight appearances in the English top flight this season, his average performance rating ranks as the second-highest in the squad at 7.04/10 according to WhoScored.com, illustrating the positive impact he has had since being called upon.

TIF Thoughts…

Leeds United recently confirmed the signing of Illan Meslier from Ligue 1 side Lorient, but judging by Hay’s comments, Marcelo Bielsa may feel he is in need of somebody with more experience if Kiko Casilla ends up leaving.

Martinez is currently valued £2.52m according to Transfermarkt.co.uk, but if Leno is to walk back into the number-one spot upon his return from injury, the 27-year-old could consider a move away from north London in search of first-team football, in which case Elland Road may prove an attractive destination.
