Rick Everitt, a Charlton Athletic fan, and the editor of Addicks-focused fanzine ‘Voice of The Valley’ caught the attention of a lot of Charlton fans recently after he posted a tweet that included a link to an article from Voice of The Valley, which claims that ex-Addicks chief executive Peter Varney and investor Andrew Barclay are “ready to rescue” the club.

This article claims that these two have been working together to plan this takeover bid “for a number of weeks” and they state that the pair are now prepared to buy the club, the freehold title to The Valley and Charlton’s training ground.

In addition to this claim, this report from Voice of The Valley also includes quotes from Varney, who has stated that he is confident that Barclay “offers stability and the best future for Charlton”.

A lot of Addicks fans have flocked to Everitt’s tweet sharing this report and they have been sharing their thoughts on this latest development.

Many Addicks fans responded positively to this report, with one Charlton supporter stating that this would be their “dream scenario”.

This article explains that Varney was Charlton’s chief executive from 1997 until 2008, before subsequently becoming the Addicks’ executive vice-chairman from 2010 until 2012, with the club promoted to the Premier League on two occasions during Varney’s tenure as chief executive as they spent the vast majority of that time in England’s top flight.

With that in mind, it may be understandable why some Addicks fans may have some positive memories of Varney and his time at The Valley and it might not be too surprising to see that they are responding positively to this report detailing his involvement with this new takeover bid.
