The Athletic recently published a report discussing Nottingham Forest’s plans for “key out-of-contract players” – and hinted that Forest will be on the hunt for a back-up goalkeeper in the upcoming summer transfer window.

This article explains that Forest are required to inform players whose contracts are set to expire at the end of this month whether or not they intend to offer them a new deal by 23rd June and the report goes on to reveal that goalkeepers Jordan Smith and Luke Steele, both of whom are currently set to see their deals with the club end on 30th June, “are expected to be among those told that they will be released.”

We will look at Marcelo Bielsa to kick off this quiz on the Championship's managers, which of these national teams has the Leeds United boss managed?

In addition to these goalkeeping departures, this report explains that Arijanet Muric, who had been on loan with the club during the 2019/20 season, has returned to his parent club Manchester City and whilst Costel Pantilimon is set to return from a loan spell away from the City Ground, the Romanian “is unlikely to challenge Brice Samba”.

After explaining all of this, The Athletic’s report goes on to claim that Forest “will look to sign” a back-up goalkeeper this summer to challenge Samba.

Do Nottingham Forest need more depth in the goalkeeping position?

TIF Thoughts…

Samba has played a higher number of minutes than all but three other Forest players this season. Muric and Smith are the only other goalkeepers who accumulated any game time for Forest this term and as this report states, neither of those players are currently expected to be at the City Ground next season.

With that in mind, it may be understandable why Forest might feel the need to enter the market for a new goalkeeper this summer.
