Celtic’s recent links with Peterborough striker Ivan Toney have been quashed and no talks have reportedly been held between the two parties.

The Glasgow Times recently reported this, saying that there has been no contact between Celtic and Toney’s representatives.

Starting with an easy one: which Italian club did Nakamura join Celtic from?

This comes in response to Peterborough director of football Barry Fry claiming that Celtic and their Old Firm rivals are ‘very interested’ in signing the League One striker. Fry had given this interview to the Daily Mail (via The Scottish Sun) and he had revealed that the Hoops or the Gers will have to pay £15 million to sign Toney.

The interview also had Fry saying that Toney is ‘definitely’ up for sale since the Posh are not getting promoted this season. He said that while Toney will leave, he will depart the club only for the ‘right price’. But it now seems as though Fry’s claims about Toney were false.

The 2019/20 season was a good one for Toney. The striker made 39 appearances in all competitions for the Posh, scoring as many as 26 goals. In League One, he played 32 games and found the net 24 times and assisted six times as well (via Transfermarkt).

TIF Thoughts…

Those numbers show how reliable a goalscorer Toney is and how important he is for Peterborough. But with Celtic manager Neil Lennon having confirmed that the club is in talks to hand Odsonne Edouard a new contract, it may not make sense for them to sign Toney.

Apart from Edouard, Celtic have Leigh Griffiths, Vakoun Bayo and Patryk Klimala as their striker options and adding another striker to their ranks won’t make much sense.
