Spurs fans on Twitter have been reacting to some quotes from Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl regarding his captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The Lilywhites have been heavily linked with the former Bayern Munich midfielder in recent weeks, and the Saints boss recently spoke to BBC Radio Solent about the 24-year-old, saying (via Ricky Sacks): “As a captain, you can’t lead a team without extending your contract. I think we should avoid letting players go without a transfer fee.”

How well do you remember Heung-Min Son's time with Spurs? - The Lilywhites signed Son from which Bundesliga side?

The Danish international’s contract with Southampton is set to expire at the end of next season and Hasenhüttl’s quotes certainly seem to suggest that he would be willing to cash in on the midfielder should he not be willing to extend his current deal. The midfielder has averaged a solid 6.82 rating across his 28 appearances in the Premier League so far this season, having contributed no goals and one assist (per WhoScored).

The 24-year-old rates fourth in both key passes and tackles per game for Southampton so far this season (per WhoScored), suggesting that he could be a good addition to Spurs’ midfield. Fellow defensive midfielder Victor Wanayama departed for MLS side Montreal Impact in March, whilst it has been suggested that Eric Dier will feature as a centre-back going forward, so you could argue that Jose Mourinho’s side are in need of a defensive-minded midfielder in the summer window.

Do you think Spurs will sign Hojbjerg this summer?

Reaction from Spurs fans to Hasenhüttl’s quotes on Hojbjerg can be seen in the tweets below.

Some Spurs fans were clearly delighted with the news and are seemingly hoping that Spurs can convince the Danish midfielder to join the Lilywhites this summer.

Other Spurs fans seem less keen on a move for the 24-year-old.

Overall, it seems as if the majority of Spurs fans would welcome a move for Hojbjerg this summer and seem confident that Hasenhuttl’s quotes suggest that he could be leaving Southampton in the near future.
