Journalist Alasdair Gold has been full of praise for the performance of Giovani Lo Celso in Tottenham’s win over West Ham United recently.

The latest video on Gold’s YouTube channel recently came out and the journalist was talking about the club’s transfers, potential incomings, Tanguy Ndombele and one thing he did focus on was the performance of Lo Celso against the Hammers on Tuesday.

How well do you remember Heung-Min Son's time with Spurs? - The Lilywhites signed Son from which Bundesliga side?

In the club’s 2-0 win over their London rivals, Lo Celso played beside Moussa Sissoko in midfield. While the Argentine didn’t pick up an assist or a goal, he did earn an impressive Whoscored rating of 7.62 in the game and that was second-best behind Declan Rice (via WhoScored).

Lo Celso really impressed Gold as well. The journalist said: “Lo Celso, as I said, what a player – absolutely brilliant. I wish you could clone Lo Celso, because I’d love to see a Lo Celso playing in that three behind [Harry] Kane. Because every time he gets into an advanced position, he makes something happen.

Has Lo Celso been Tottenham's best player this season?

Absolutely

Absolutely

“He played [Heung-min] Son through for the goal that wasn’t – the VAR ruled it off, he played in Kane for what should have been a goal, it was his corner that eventually bobbled in. I don’t think he actually gets an assist for that – because he actually hasn’t had a Premier League assist and in this game, [he] arguably could’ve had three.”

Gold lauded the former Paris Saint-Germain man for how he played in a deeper role: “But in that deeper role, he’s also superb. He tackles back, he slides into tackles, he hassles, harries, passes the ball, keeps possession. And the Mark Noble thing – oh my God – he jinked around Mark Noble, who was just left absolutely flummoxed.”

That is pretty high praise for Lo Celso and considering the rating he got from the game, he probably deserves that praise too. The manner in which Gold talks about the job he does in the deeper areas should be really encouraging for Spurs fans.

TIF Thoughts…

Lo Celso had initially joined Spurs on loan from Real Betis in the summer of 2019, but his move to the North London club was made permanent in the January transfer window.

Since arriving from the La Liga side, Lo Celso has picked up an overall Whoscored rating of 6.68 this season. But he was really good for the club in the Champions League, earning a pretty impressive 7.31 rating.

While he hasn’t picked a goal or assist in the Premier League yet, the performance against West Ham was really promising. With the club now seventh in the Premier League, Lo Celso could be crucial to Spurs gaining potential European qualification. Fans will certainly hope that he keeps this form going in the remainder of the campaign.
