On the latest episode of Tottenham Hotspur podcast The Extra Inch, Chris Miller and Nathan Clark discussed the latest-goings on at the north London club and looked back on Spurs’ 1-1 draw with Manchester United last Friday.

One particular topic of conversation on the episode, which was titled: ‘Bergwijn’s Poise, Crowd Noise, Fully COYS’, was the Dutch winger himself. The 22-year-old opened the scoring in Spurs’ re-opening Premier League match, bursting past Harry Maguire before rifling a shot on goal, which proved too powerful for David de Gea to keep out (per BBC).

How well can you remember Spurs' season so far? - Who did Spurs beat in the opening fixture?

it was the 22-year-old’s third goal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, since joining from PSV Eindhoven in the January transfer window, so it was perhaps unsurprising to hear both Miller and Clark singing his praises on the podcast.

Here’s what Clark had to say about the winger:

“I was really excited about his signing. His talent is really special and it was a really good capture. He’s 22, he’s been playing Eredivisie football, which is often a slower tempo and much less physicality, but physically he stands out. He stood out in this game, he was strong on the ball, the way he lowers his body weight and everything. He’s only 22 and he’s already a top-six player, for sure. The question is, is he going to be crucial to our rebuild over the next five years? Sure.”

Miller then weighs in with his opinion on the Dutch international, saying:

“He’s a really good player, really exciting. [He] steps up with goals, [he] scored against both Manchester clubs. That is no mean feat. I think he has a very high ceiling. Really, really, really excited to see what he can do. I like the fact that he’s versatile and he can play a number of positions, and we would trust him in any of the three behind the striker.”

He also goes on to make the claim that:

“I see Bergwijn as already being so much more effective than Lucas [Moura].”

TIF Thoughts…

In terms of his average rating, it is easy to see why the duo seem to prefer having Bergwijn on from the start ahead of Moura. The Dutchman has averaged an impressive 6.95 rating across his seven appearances in the Premier League thus far (per WhoScored), whilst the Brazilian has a less impressive 6.88 rating.

Is Bergwijn key to the rebuild at Spurs?

No

However, Moura was given the nod to start ahead of the 22-year-old during Tuesday night’s game against West Ham but struggled to have much impact; earning a 6.86 rating for his performance. Therefore, it might not be a surprise to see the former PSV man restored to the starting line-up when Spurs face Sheffield United in their next fixture, in what could be a hugely important game in the context of the race for a European spot.
