Who scored Southampton's first goal of the season?

The 20-year-old has been with the Saints since the age of eight, progressing through the youth ranks impressively and then breaking into the first-team this season under the guidance of manager Ralph Hasenhuttl (per Southampton FC).

This season has seen the academy graduate make two appearances for the Saints in the Premier League, the first of which saw him complete 80 minutes during Southampton’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa back in February.

Directly after that match, Smallbone then played 78 minutes in the Saints’ 3-1 defeat to West Ham United (per Transfermarkt).

These two appearances for Southampton in the Premier League earned Smallbone a season rating of 6.49/10 according to WhoScored.

As well as these two Premier League appearances, Smallbone also played 71 minutes in Southampton’s FA Cup third-round victory over Huddersfield Town in which he managed to grab himself a goal in the 2-0 win back in January (per Transfermarkt).

TIF Thoughts…

It’s great that the club have given Smallbone some chances in the Premier League and FA Cup this season to allow him to show what he is capable of.

The fact that he has signed a new four-year contract at St. Mary’s just goes to show that the club have the confidence and belief in him that he can be a regular figure in the Southampton squad for the next few years.

The Southampton fans will now have to wait and see whether or not Smallbone gets picked to play in any of the Saints’ remaining Premier League fixtures when the season resumes later this month.
