Southampton pundit Steve Grant has recently been talking about Danny Ings and has discussed what the club’s potential asking price for the Englishman should be.

Grant was recently a guest on the latest episode of the ‘Total Saints Podcast’ and a discussion took place about Ings’ situation at St. Mary’s. Grant talked about Ings’ potential value if clubs come calling for the striker at some point in the near future.

Who scored Southampton's first goal of the season?

Ings was on target twice in the Saints’ recent 3-1 win over Watford in the Premier League last weekend. Aside from the English striker, James Ward-Prowse also got a goal for himself.

While talking about Ings and his value though, Grant suggested that the Saints should not even entertain bids around the £40m mark.

He said: “Ultimately, it comes down to us being strong enough to withhold the mediocre-type bids that you might ordinarily expect.

Will Southampton lose Ings in the summer?

Yes, we will

“Something in the [area] of £40m – that’s of no interest to anybody, surely? [It’s] double what we paid for him – fine, but we’re not going to be able to find a replacement for that money.

“And there are a lot of players that we’ve sold that we’ve still not replaced properly as we’ve discussed before, but just the volume of goals –  you’ve just got to say no to anything.

“The number doesn’t really matter in that sense, I think. For once, it is the perception rather than the actual action.”

Going by what Grant has to say, the club shouldn’t accept a smaller fee for Ings as that sort of money wouldn’t help them replace the player properly.

TIF Thoughts…

Ings has been a really active goalscorer for the Saints this season and he has scored 18 goals in the Premier League. In all competitions, the former Liverpool man has found the net 21 times and has three assists to his name as well (via Transfermarkt).

As per FBRef, Ings has scored 0.72 non-penalty goals per 90 minutes this season. That is the second-best tally in the league, only behind Sergio Aguero. This shows how efficient a goalscorer he has become for the club this season.

Ings is currently valued at £15.75 million by Transfermarkt and clubs may not find it tough to match that price. So, Southampton need to be cautious about how they value Ings. Considering how vital he is for them, losing the striker could be disastrous for Southampton.
