The Athletic’s Southampton journalist Carl Anka has recently talked about Tottenham Hotspur target Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and his future at St. Mary’s.

The Athletic’s latest episode of ‘The Ornstein & Chapman Podcast’ had Anka as a guest recently. The Saints journalist was asked about Hojbjerg and what the future might hold for the Dane, amidst links with a move away from Southampton.

Who scored Southampton's first goal of the season?

Anka went onto give some details about Hojbjerg and how his social media activity could signal a potential exit from Southampton.

He said: “There’s been some interesting actions from Hojbjerg on social media. So within his Twitter likes, he’s liked a post from another sports website which has said that Tottenham are interested in him. He’s also shared something on Instagram stories about ‘If only they had stayed Southampton XI’ that included himself in it.”

Do you think Hojbjerg is keen to leave Southampton?

Yes, he wants to leave

Yes, he wants to leave

He wants to stay

While this might be an alarming update for Saints fans, Anka admitted that there is no clarity about when Hojbjerg could leave Southampton.

“I think there’s definitely a roadmap for Hojbjerg leaving. Whether or not he [Hojbjerg] leaves at the end of this season, whenever it might happen, wherever that happens or if he does leave when becomes a free agent- it will be a bit hard to decipher.”

Judging by Anka’s words, Hojbjerg’s future is clearly up in the air and only time will tell as to where he ends up next season.

TIF Thoughts…

Hojbjerg’s current deal at the South Coast club runs out in the summer of 2021 and reports have stated that he has rejected Southampton’s attempts to hand him a new deal. Hojbjerg is valued at £10.8 million by Transfermarkt and the Saints will not like to lose the chance to earn that money by letting him leave on a free transfer next summer.

He is only 24 currently and Southampton could earn good money from a potential sale. So selling him this summer will help them and they could even replace him with the money they get from a sale. The pandemic is expected to dent clubs in a financial sense but getting money from Hojbjerg’s sale can help Southampton in that aspect too.
