Newcastle United fans on Twitter have been responding to the latest news surrounding goalkeeper Rob Elliot.
This comes after Newcastle-focused Twitter account @NUFC360 shared a post on their page relaying news originally published in an article by George Caulkin for The Athletic.
Caulkin revealed that Elliot “will not be offered a deal for next season” when his current contract at the club expires this summer.
This post then gathered a lot of replies from Newcastle fans, who were quick to share their thoughts on this latest news.
Here’s a sample of Newcastle fans responding to the post:
Rob Elliot will not be offered a new deal at Newcastle and will leave at the end of his current contract on 30 June. #nufc [The Athletic] pic.twitter.com/rn8FTiDE9r

Probably the right time for him to leave but he will be remembered fondly by the fanbase I think. Very decent keeper on his day and a great servant to the club!

The 34-year-old first joined Newcastle back in 2011 from Championship side Charlton Athletic (per Transfermarkt)
Could still be number 1 for most championship clubs imo, been wasted here the last couple seasons

Since then, the Irishman has gone on to make just 68 first-team appearances for Newcastle, in which he has managed to keep 17 clean sheets (per Transfermarkt).
Great guy, great servant. The sort you need in every dressing room. Hopefully he goes somewhere where he gets first team football because he’s wasted in the Reserves.

Should Newcastle offer Rob Elliot a new contract?
Yes
No
This season, however, has seen Elliot yet to make an appearance for Steve Bruce’s side (per Transfermarkt).
Disappointed. Great club man and squad player, never moaned and just got on with things. Seems a thoroughly decent bloke too. Reminds me of Mike Williamson in that regard. Shame to see him go.

Love you, @the_dilsh! Been great for us. Will miss you. Always a Geordie.

Big shame, always rated him especially after the match winning performance against Bournemouth @the_dilsh

Saudi’s done this as Ashley would want to keep him so he doesn’t have to buy another or he’d wanna sell him

Now that it has been reported that the club will not be offering Elliot a new contract, this sparked a big reaction on Twitter, with many Newcastle fans sharing their messages to the ‘keeper.
However, there was one Newcastle fan who took a different approach to this news of Elliot’s imminent departure from the club.
It’s good really Elliot should of been let go years ago

It’s a shame that Elliot won’t be continuing at the club after being a Newcastle player for so long.
Looking at the majority of these replies from this group of Newcastle fans, it’s clear that Elliot certainly left a big impact on these fans, many of whom clearly respect the goalkeeper.
Given the fact that Elliot hasn’t made any appearances for the club so far this season, it may be the best time for him to move on when the season ends.
Whatever Elliot chooses to do in his career after his contract expires at Newcastle, it appears he will certainly be missed by the supporters.
