Newcastle United fans on Twitter have been responding to the latest news surrounding goalkeeper Rob Elliot.

This comes after Newcastle-focused Twitter account @NUFC360 shared a post on their page relaying news originally published in an article by George Caulkin for The Athletic.

Nice easy one to start off with, which club did Newcastle United sign Shearer from in 1996?

Caulkin revealed that Elliot “will not be offered a deal for next season” when his current contract at the club expires this summer.

This post then gathered a lot of replies from Newcastle fans, who were quick to share their thoughts on this latest news.

Here’s a sample of Newcastle fans responding to the post:

The 34-year-old first joined Newcastle back in 2011 from Championship side Charlton Athletic (per Transfermarkt)

Since then, the Irishman has gone on to make just 68 first-team appearances for Newcastle, in which he has managed to keep 17 clean sheets (per Transfermarkt).

Should Newcastle offer Rob Elliot a new contract?

This season, however, has seen Elliot yet to make an appearance for Steve Bruce’s side (per Transfermarkt).

Now that it has been reported that the club will not be offering Elliot a new contract, this sparked a big reaction on Twitter, with many Newcastle fans sharing their messages to the ‘keeper.

However, there was one Newcastle fan who took a different approach to this news of Elliot’s imminent departure from the club.

It’s a shame that Elliot won’t be continuing at the club after being a Newcastle player for so long.

Looking at the majority of these replies from this group of Newcastle fans, it’s clear that Elliot certainly left a big impact on these fans, many of whom clearly respect the goalkeeper.

Given the fact that Elliot hasn’t made any appearances for the club so far this season, it may be the best time for him to move on when the season ends.

Whatever Elliot chooses to do in his career after his contract expires at Newcastle, it appears he will certainly be missed by the supporters.
