A group of Newcastle United supporters have been responding to a recent tweet from The Athletic’s George Caulkin. All of the talk around the club at the moment is centred around the proposed takeover by Amanda Staveley’s Saudi-backed consortium.
The Premier League is yet to announce a decision despite reportedly having been conducting the owners’ and directors’ test since April, a process that is said to take up to four or five weeks generally.
Caulkin has provided an update on the situation in response to a question from @graemepilkingto who asked the senior writer how confident he was of the takeover being completed, to which he responded:
“In terms of length of time it’s taken, that horrible sense of limbo, I can’t say I’m overjoyed. The people I speak to are the same – but they’re also still convinced it will happen, however long it takes the PL to get there.”
Here is how a sample of the St. James’ Park faithful have responded to Caulkin’s tweet.
Surely the buyers confidence is now absolutely irrelevant and misplaced, they thought it would be done weeks ago and were not prepared for what has happened since then.

Given that you are well trusted and in contact with the buying side, I’d say your confidence means everything to us, George.

Words of absolute gold

Are you confident the takeover will be completed?
Yes
No
Some fans were feeling more upbeat having read Caulkin’s update, but overall, the responses were mixed with one fan claiming the confidence of the buyers is ‘irrelevant and misplaced’. According to Chronicle Live, Mike Ashley will ‘soon look to seek some clarity on where the club’s takeover deal currently stands with the Premier League’ – which suggests he is as concerned and as in the dark as everybody else. Fans of the club continued to respond via the social media platform.
I think the sooner people accept that its not happening, the better it will be for everyone.

Must be into 6 figures now for “how confident / still confident?” combined, since early April.

Caulkin’s update is a positive one for all who remain desperate to see the back of Mike Ashley but having said that, you can forgive some fans for feeling somewhat pessimistic given the time it has taken for a decision to be reached.
