Nice easy one to start off with, which club did Newcastle United sign Shearer from in 1996?

The Daily Telegraph reporter was asked what he thought about the Longstaff situation, and this is what he said.

“He has been offered £30,000 a week but it is not just the £30,000 per week that he has been offered.

“I can’t really put a figure on it, but he has been offered a multi-million-pound signing on fee which will be divided up between various people.

“It is a very, very lucrative deal.”

Edwards in this interview has revealed that Udinese’s offer of £30,000 per week is accurate but also the fact that he has a multi-million-pound signing on fee waiting for him should he decide to leave St. James’ Park.

Do you agree with Edwards?

TIF Thoughts…

Longstaff has only made seven Premier League appearances this season, of which six have been starts.

However, in that time, he has scored two goals against Manchester United.

The 20-year-old flew out to Italy before lockdown started in this country, and Keith Downie stated that he had received an offer of £30,000 per week.

However, no mention was made of the signing on fee from Downie, so Edwards has provided some useful information (29:30), and it is easy to see why he has a dilemma on his hands.

Newcastle responded to Udinese’s offer with a wage of around £25,000 per week plus bonuses, as revealed by Edwards. (30:25)

Therefore, it appears as if Sean Longstaff’s brother has a decision to make.

Edwards later claims in the podcast that he thinks Longstaff should stay on Tyneside because he would have dreamt of this moment his whole life, so why would he give it up? (31:10)

This is a good point, and we agree with Edwards on this one.
