The Independent’s Miguel Delaney recently caught the attention of many Newcastle United supporters after he posted a tweet about Amanda Staveley.

Delaney posted his tweet to inform his followers that Staveley was in the process of “giving evidence in the Barclays case” on the morning of Friday 12th June. As per Chronicle Live, Staveley has been involved in a High Court battle with Barclays Bank lately, as she has claimed that she is owed money, along with her PCP Capital Partners firm, “for the work they did in setting up a Middle East investment deal for Barclays during the 2008 crisis”. The journalist also shared a link to a stream of this court hearing via his tweet.

Nice easy one to start off with, which club did Newcastle United sign Shearer from in 1996?

Delaney refers to Staveley, who is leading a Saudi-backed takeover attempt of Newcastle United at present, as “the saviour of Newcastle”, which some Toon fans have identified as a sarcastic remark.

The journalist has been critical of this Saudi-backed Toon takeover attempt in the past. He wrote an article back in April stating that the takeover attempt is “about sportswashing, not football”. After he posted his latest tweet in reference to Staveley, plenty of Toon fans flocked to the post to share their criticisms of Delaney.

Some Newcastle supporters replied to this tweet to call Delaney “bitter”.

There may be a conversation to be had over whether or not this takeover should be allowed and Delaney’s previous argument of this being an example of sportswashing may present some valid points from a moral and political perspective.

However, reports have claimed that the successful completion of this takeover would see the Toon have the wealthiest owners in the Premier League and with that in mind, it mightn’t come as a surprise that some Toon fans are defending those involved with this takeover attempt, as they may see this takeover as an opportunity for their club to compete at a higher level and if this is their primary concern, then it could be difficult for someone to make an argument to these fans that they should be taking non-sporting issues into consideration.
