Nice easy one to start off with, which club did Newcastle United sign Shearer from in 1996?

He has revealed the scepticism of those on the buying side regarding any news of a rival bid, and they believe that they are in the front seat when it comes to this deal.

Here is what Castles had to say in full about the confidence from the buying side:

“They’re actually quite sceptical that anyone else would’ve been able to put the finances in place to have a deal ready to go should the Premier League say no to them.

“It’s an expensive process to get the amount of funds in position to make a £300m – or £350m as has been reported for the bid from America – transaction. You can talk about these things, but to actually have the structures ready to do a deal in place of another agreed bid is an expensive process.

“What I can say is I don’t sense any concern from them whatsoever that they’re about to be gazumped or that someone else is going to take control of the football club.”

It seems as if the potential buyers of Newcastle United do not believe that there is anyone else available to buy the Toon – so they are not worried by interest from other groups.

Do you think that Mauriss is a serious bidder?

TIF Thoughts…

Henry Mauriss is the bidder from America, which Castles talks about, with interest emerging since April, and on Wednesday, he reportedly made a bid of £350m.

However, it appears as if the consortium led by Amanda Staveley, which is currently having their deal checked by the Premier League, do not believe that there are any other serious bidders out there.

This, therefore, makes Mauriss’ offer look unconvincing, with the Saudi-backed consortium not seeing it as a threat.

It must be remembered that BeIN Sports submitted a QC’s opinion to the PL alerting them to the presence of this other bid – so maybe they have a reason for doing that. However, it is clear that the Staveley-led consortium does not see any other bid as a threat to their offer.
