It has been reported by Manchester Evening News that Manchester City are currently in the process of appealing sanctions handed down to them by UEFA.

The Citizens were handed sanctions after being found guilty of breaking financial fair play regulations, which includes a two-year ban from the Champions League. This implies that if the ban cannot be overturned, the side that finishes fifth in this year’s Premier League season, presuming that Pep Guardiola’s side finishes in the top four, could be awarded a spot in next season’s competition.

Man City fan? We bet you can't get 100% on this Yaya Toure quiz. We'll start you off with an easy one... Who did Yaya Toure sign for City from back in 2010?

The report from MEN suggests that:

“Legal representatives of Manchester City are currently appealing against sanctions handed down to them by UEFA due to ‘serious breaches’ of their Financial Fair Play regulations.

“City were handed a large fine and a two-year ban from European competitions. The Blues have appealed against the ruling and the appeal hearing is currently the second of its three scheduled days at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. It’s not yet known when a verdict will be announced.

“It means the club and its top players are in limbo – will the appeal fail, leaving them without European football for two years, or will it be successful, possibly leaving the whole concept of FFP in tatters?”

TIF Thoughts…

It has been suggested in the past that if the ban is upheld, some of City’s top players could leave the club this summer, so the Citizens will no doubt be doing everything they can to try and overturn the ban from UEFA. With the financial side of football set to be seriously impacted by the current viral outbreak, the €30 million (£25 million) fine could also have more of a significant impact than first thought.

It will be interesting to see if the Manchester club are able to overturn UEFA’s original decision, and how the club cope in terms of keeping hold of some of their most talented players, should the ban from the Champions League be upheld.
