Liverpool are reportedly close to securing a new deal for midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum.

This comes after it was recently published in a report by Football Insider which claims that talks are ‘progressing well and all parties are confident of an agreement after a recent breakthrough’.

The report also adds that the Dutchman is ‘keen to end his career’ with the Merseyside club. Wijnaldum has also reportedly sought out and been given ‘assurances he will still be a key figure’ in Jurgen Klopp’s side.

Finally, the report claimed that ‘it is expected’ that Wijnaldum will sign a deal that will keep him at Anfield for another four years.

The 29-year-old first signed to the Merseyside club back in the 2016 summer transfer window from fellow Premier League club Newcastle United for a fee of £24.75 million (per Transfermarkt).

Since then, the Dutchman has made a total of 179 appearances for the Reds in which he has managed to score 18 goals and provide 16 assists along the way.

This season, Wijnaldum has made a total of 30 Premier League appearances for the Reds with his performances in those appearances earning himself a season rating of 6.84/10, making him Liverpool’s 14th-highest rated player for this campaign.

Given how many appearances Wijnaldum has made for the Reds, not just this season but since he joined the club, he is clearly an important figure for Klopp.

The fact that Liverpool are trying to tie Wijnaldum down to a new contract at the club also proves just how much they value having him in their squad.
