Liverpool are one of two clubs who could end up signing Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich, according to Sport Bild

Thiago’s current contract is due to expire in June 2021 (as per Transfermarkt.co.uk) and according to this report, terms had been agreed between the 29-year-old and the club for an extension. However, the Spaniard has now ‘backed off’ after reconsidering and sees this as his last chance to join another top European club.

2018/19 season quiz: How many points did Jurgen Klopp's side accumulate in the Premier League?

Jurgen Klopp is said to ‘think highly‘ of the midfield technician and according to Sport Bild, has a need for ‘additional quality in central midfield‘. Thiago has made 24 appearances in the Bundesliga for the German champions this season, starting in 61% of those games.

Sport Witness states that at a recent squad gathering following their Bundesliga triumph which was hosted by Thiago, ‘the feeling amongst those who were in the attendance was that, it could be the midfielder’s farewell party’.

They also stated: ‘Bayern have so far not received any offer for Thiago, but there have been suggestions about interest from the Reds.’

According to WhoScored.com, his average performance rating in the league stands at 7.47/10, making him the fourth-most consistent player in a highly talented squad behind Serge Gnabry, Alphonso Davies and Robert Lewandowski.

TIF Thoughts…

We believe the former Barcelona man to be an excellent midfielder and that is backed up by the aforementioned rating and the fact he is valued at £43.2m. However, given Liverpool were unwilling to meet Timo Werner’s release clause, paving the way for him to join their Premier League rivals Chelsea, you could argue the club have no plans to spend big this summer.

In our opinion, the seven-time Bundesliga champion would add quality to any team but the report makes no mention of any discussions having taken place between the two clubs, therefore, at this stage, we believe this to be nothing more than speculation.
