Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has been discussing how Liverpool’s Premier League title win may actually cost the club money.

Following Manchester City’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea last week, Jurgen Klopp’s Reds were crowned champions of England for the first time in 30 years (per BBC).

The Merseyside outfit currently have a 23-point lead over the Citizens with seven matches left to play (per BBC).

However, in the latest episode of The Price of Football Podcast, Maguire discussed that rather than earning them anything financially, the title win may actually cost Liverpool money.

2018/19 season quiz: How many points did Jurgen Klopp's side accumulate in the Premier League?

He said: “Whilst the Premier League is paved with gold to a certain extent, in terms of extra money coming in, winning the Premier League won’t necessarily have brought Liverpool huge rewards.

“They do get an extra £2.5m per place. So, therefore, compared to last year, that’s an extra £2.5m for being first as opposed to second.

“There will be some sponsor bonuses but I don’t think they’ll necessarily be huge, and their ‘Premier League champions 2019/20’ merchandise has already gone on sale. So, there’s extra money coming in.

“But then you start to look at the extra money going out, and I think player bonuses will more than eat up most of that extra prize money and then Jurgen Klopp himself is likely to have a significant bonus.

“So, that’s the player side of things. But then it transpires that Liverpool, of course, have recruited many players and they’ve recruited extremely well, and there will be sell-on clauses and bonus clauses.”

TIF Thoughts…

So, judging from what the financial expert had to say, it seems that winning the Premier League title will actually have cost the Reds money as opposed to earning them any.

Are you bothered that Liverpool may be out of pocket after winning the title?

No, doesn't bother me

Yes, that's concerning

Yes, that's concerning

However, with the league title being the club’s first one in 30 years, it seems unlikely that supporters will care for any financial loss.
