Aston Villa journalist Cole Pettem has made a claim regarding Wolves winger and former Villa man Adama Traore.

This comes after Pettem recently hosted the latest edition of Holtecast, a Villa-based podcast to reflect on Villa’s recent 1-0 loss to Wolves at the weekend.

Who scored Villa's goal in their 1-0 win against Stoke City on the opening day of the 2014/15 Premier League season?

While discussing the match, Pettem shared his thoughts and opinions on Traore.

He said: “In my opinion, he’s still a utility man. He’s getting more aspects to his game, but he’s still pretty one-dimensional in the sense that he just runs down the wing and causes trouble.

“Adding some more skill into that, I’ll give him that, I’m not going to ever say he’s terrible because hell, I would take him right now – I think a lot of teams would. But I think it speaks to the volume of our defence how it cracks within three minutes of a player like that coming on.”

Traore first joined Villa back in 2015 but after spending just one year at Villa Park, he then signed to Middlesbrough for a fee of £7.43 million in 2016.

Did Villa make a mistake letting Traore leave the club?

In 2018, the Spaniard signed for Wolves for a fee of £18 million where he has gone on to make 82 appearances for the club, scoring seven goals and providing 15 assists along the way (per Transfermarkt).

In the recent 1-0 defeat to Wolves at Villa Park, despite only coming on as a substitute in the second half, Traore earned himself a match rating of 7.03/10, which is more than all but one of Villa’s players that made an appearance in the match (per WhoScored).

TIF Thoughts…

After making just 12 appearances for Villa during his brief spell at the club, it’s clear that Traore has settled and developed his game at Wolves given that he is currently the highest-rated player for this campaign in Wolves’ squad (per WhoScored).
