Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has shared an injury update concerning Villa midfielder John McGinn ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League clash with Sheffield United.

This comes after Smith recently revealed to VillaTV (via Birmingham Mail) that having McGinn back in training with the rest of the team has been a “big boost” for the squad.

Smith also added that McGinn played in both of Villa’s recent training matches against West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City.

Back in December, McGinn fractured his ankle during Villa’s defeat to Southampton, resulting in the Scottish international missing every game for Villa since.

McGinn first signed to Villa back in 2018 from Hibernian for a fee of £2.79 million, according to Transfermarkt.

Since then, the 25-year-old has gone on to make 65 appearances for the club, in which he has managed to score 11 goals and provide 12 assists (per Transfermarkt).

Before his injury, McGinn was in good form for the club, with his performances in his 18 Premier League appearances resulting in the midfielder being awarded a season rating of 7.26/10, making him Villa’s second-highest-rated player in this campaign (per WhoScored).

TIF Thoughts…

It’s great to hear that McGinn has been working his way back to full fitness by returning to team training and taking part in these recent training matches.

The hope for McGinn and Smith would now be that the midfielder can take part in Villa’s remaining Premier League fixtures and try his best to help his club avoid relegation back to the Championship.
