Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil is a ‘disgrace’, according to Chris Sutton. The former German international is yet to appear for the Gunners since the Premier League’s restart, having missed the trip to Manchester City and then being an unused substitute in the weekend’s defeat at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Mikel Arteta will no doubt be disappointed with the way his side have restarted their campaign after being on an impressive unbeaten run leading into the suspension of the competition back in March. If any Arsenal fans were getting ahead of themselves in regards to the signs of improvement shown at the start of 2020, these last two results have been a stark reminder of how much work still needs to be done.

Speaking on the BBC’s Football Daily podcast, Sutton claimed Ozil is one of a number of players who have let their head coach down. He said: “I don’t feel sorry for Arsenal at all. I feel sorry for the fans, I feel sorry for Arteta, but I think he’s been so badly let down.

“Mesut Ozil couldn’t get on the bench and they had nine players on the bench. Arteta criticised his attitude in training. He’s on £350k a week. He’s an absolute disgrace, he has to give Arteta far more than that.

“Ozil is like a bad smell at the club, he really is. He is a nightmare for Arteta. A guy who is eating up massive, massive wages at the club who isn’t committed. Ozil owes Arsenal far more than he has actually given.”

TIF Thoughts…

In 18 Premier League appearances this season, Ozil has contributed just one goal and two assists (as per Transfermarkt.co.uk). His average performance rating currently stands at 6.71/10 according to WhoScored.com, making him the club’s 13th-most consistent performer.

Given he is the club’s highest-paid player and his underwhelming outputs, you can understand why he has been the victim of such criticism.
