The Athletic’s James McNicholas would like to see Arsenal sign Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings in the event the Villans are relegated back to the Championship.
Arsenal recently announced the signing of Pablo Mari on a permanent deal and an extension to David Luiz’s contract which was due to expire at the end of this month (via Arsenal.com).
As well as the aforementioned pair, Mikel Arteta has Shkodran Mustafi, Rob Holding and Sokratis available to him (per Transfermarkt) with William Saliba due to join up with the squad ahead of next season (per Sky Sports).
Calum Chambers will also return from a long-term injury and so whilst there is a debate to be had around whether or not these players are up to standard, they certainly have the numbers.
During the latest Arsecast Extra, McNicholas was asked who he would like to see the Gunners move for from the clubs that are currently fighting relegation to which he replied: “Tyrone Mings, from Aston Villa, I’d buy him. He is a left-sided centre-back, six foot-plus, strong, I think he’s a really good player and if they go down someone will buy him. You could have four good years out of him.”
TIF Thoughts…
Tyrone Mings has made 27 appearances in the Premier League this season for Aston Villa (as per Transfermarkt.co.uk). Dean Smith’s side faces the prospect of relegation this season, currently sitting in 19th place, the Birmingham-based club is level on points with West Ham United in 17th (via premierleague.com).

In our view, if they were to suffer relegation, we could see some Premier League clubs circling around a number of their players. According to Transfermarkt.co.uk, Mings is currently valued at £20.25m although his average performance rating currently sits at an underwhelming 6.64/10.
It’s clear that McNicholas is a fan of the former Bournemouth defender but unless Arsenal offload some central-defenders this summer, we believe it to be highly unlikely they would be willing to invest in Mings for that sort of money.
