West Brom journalists Joseph Masi and Luke Hatfield discussed the Baggies’ 0-0 draw with Birmingham City last weekend during a recent edition of The Express and Star’s ‘Baggies Broadcast’ podcast, with Scotland international Matt Phillips among the topics of conversation.

Phillips started the Baggies’ game against Birmingham City this past weekend. According to WhoScored, the 29-year-old took three shots, made two key passes, and completed one successful dribble in the game before being replaced in the 60th minute.

Masi shared his thoughts on the attacker during a recent edition of The Express and Star’s Baggies Broadcast podcast, where he said: “How I’ll sum up Matt Phillips, for me, is: I think on his day, he is as good as anything in the Championship on that right wing. My issue is, I think his days are too infrequent.”

Hatfield then responded to Masi by saying: “Yeah, it’s one in every five or six games, which – don’t get me wrong – is fine, but really, you want him to put in that performance once in every three or four and when it becomes five or six, you do start to wonder.

“And to be honest, in this game, I wasn’t hugely impressed and I don’t like to single people out, especially not in a game like this where there’s so many people coming back, you just don’t know how players are going to be, but throughout, he didn’t seem to cause enough problems, for me.”

Masi then gave a critical assessment of Phillips’ performance in the Baggies’ most recent league game, saying: “I’m surprised he started, I wouldn’t have started him, if I’m honest, and I don’t think he really repaid that faith [Slaven] Bilic put in him.”

TIF Thoughts…

According to WhoScored, Matheus Pereira is the only West Brom midfielder or attacker to have earned a higher average overall rating than Phillips in this game and with that in mind, Masi’s assessment of his performance this past weekend may be quite harsh.
