Sheffield Wednesday have announced that 22-year-old left-back Matt Penney has extended his Owls contract by 12 months.

The Owls released a statement announcing this contract extension via their official website, in which they state that Penney “has enjoyed a hugely productive” spell on loan with St. Pauli of the German second division this season.

As per Transfermarkt, Penney has made 13 league appearances for St. Pauli in the 2019/20 campaign, with the left-back scoring one goal for the German side. The 22-year-old spent some time on the sidelines during the 2019/20 season after he suffered a torn muscle fibre at the end of 2019, which forced him to miss a total of seven games for his loan side.

This announcement concerning Penney comes after TEAMtalk recently claimed that Owls left-back Morgan Fox is being targeted by other Championship clubs, as well as Scottish Premiership side Rangers and the Premier League trio of Bournemouth, Norwich City, and Burnley.

Fox has made 31 appearances for Wednesday in all competitions during the 2019/20 campaign. With his contract currently set to expire at the end of June, as well as reports claiming that there is interest in him from several clubs, Penney’s contract extension may indicate that he is being lined up to replace Fox as the first-choice left-back at Hillsborough next season, should the 26-year-old Welshman depart from the club.

TIF Thoughts…

According to Transfermarkt, Penney has made just 34 first-team appearances so far in his career, with 17 of them coming with Wednesday. This is just three more first-team appearances than what Fox has made for the Owls so far this term alone. With that in mind, Penney may struggle to replace Fox if he does indeed end up becoming Wednesday’s first-choice left-back in the event that Fox depart from the club this summer.
