Some Sunderland fans have been fuming at the latest EFL update about the potential resumption of football that recently emerged on social media.

Sunderland-focused journalist James Hunter recently relayed the update from the EFL. The statement from the authorities stated that they have ‘carefully considered’ what the EFL clubs have said. But Hunter confirmed that if the league seasons in the EFL are curtailed, they would go ahead with making the decisions on a points-per-game basis.

The statement also said that while League Two clubs have ‘indicated their preference’ to curtail the season, the fate of the League One season hangs in the balance.

When Hunter relayed this information on Twitter, it caught the attention of many Sunderland fans. They weren’t too happy with the decision.

Are these delaying tactics from the EFL?

The previous meeting to resolve the issue took place earlier this month. That statement said that the EFL board has the ‘aspiration’ of completing the 2019-20 league seasons. They also confirmed that they had met with League One clubs back then too, but it was ‘acknowledged’ that creative ways need to be used to find a solution to the problem.

While the latest meeting has provided no new update on the situation in League One, many other Sunderland fans felt that all these are delaying tactics from the EFL to eventually cancel the season.

Sunderland were seventh in the League One table before football in England was suspended because of the pandemic.

It shows that the Black Cats had a chance of finishing inside the promotion or play-off places if the season was played and games resumed. In that sense, it is easy to see why Sunderland fans want the games to resume.
