In his latest Q&A session for Spurs fans, Football.london journalist Alasdair Gold has been discussing Spurs’ chances of signing former Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho in the summer transfer window.
The journalist was asked by a Spurs fan what he thought about the rumours linking the Brazilian with a move to the North London club this summer. Football Insider suggested earlier this week that the Lilywhites were considering either a loan, or loan-to-buy deal for the 27-year-old.
Gold replied to the fan, saying (per Football.london):
“Now, with the money involved at such a tough time, I can’t see Spurs committing to a future fee of that size in a position they have bodies in now. Barcelona would want an obligation to buy in any loan after what happened at Bayern.”

The Brazilian has spent the season on loan with Bayern Munich, scoring against Spurs in the 3-1 defeat at the Allianz Arena earlier in the season. Despite impressing for the Bundesliga leaders by averaging a 7.27 rating for his performances in the German top flight, it was confirmed by the club’s chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (per Der Spiegel via Daily Mail) that the club won’t be exercising their option to sign him this summer.
However, it seems that Spurs won’t be making a move to sign the £50.4 million-rated man this summer, despite Barcelona’s financial difficulties. As according to Gold, the potential future fee would prove to be too much.
This is perhaps unsurprising, considering it has been previously reported that the North London club will be forced to rely on free transfers and swap deals this summer, due to the financial impact of the current viral outbreak.
