Sheffield United-focused journalist James Shield recently posted a tweet sharing the reported news that “Sheffield United will restart the Premier League season” by taking on Aston Villa on Wednesday 17 June.

According to reports from the BBC, the Premier League have decided to go ahead with resuming the Premier League season on 17 June, when Sheffield United will travel to Villa Park in one of two fixtures that will welcome the return of England’s top flight. This article goes on to explain that following 17 June, all 20 Premier League teams will then compete in their next round of league fixtures, which are set to take place from Friday 19 June until Sunday 21 June.

Sheffield United are currently one of only four Premier League sides who have only played 28 league games this term, whilst the other 16 teams in the league have already played 29 games.

Furthermore, with the Blades currently sitting in seventh place on the table, two points behind fifth-placed Manchester United, a win over Aston Villa on 17 June would see them jump into fifth place, which is a UEFA Europa League qualification spot.

Considering that the Blades could potentially qualify for European football for next season, in addition to the fact that they haven’t played a Premier League game since the seventh of March, it may be understandable why these Sheffield United fans have responded with excitement to Shield’s tweet sharing this news regarding the resumption of the 2019/20 Premier League season.
